It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and Audi Key Fob Replacement ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at the Bosch model, like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle.
