How to Replace an replacement key audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

The replacement audi car key is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at an Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This part is common across the audi tt replacement key 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
