How to Replace an key audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several connector pins, replacement and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the Audi Key Shell's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the audi a1 car key's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car key replacement audi's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi tt key case 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
