Ford-New.pngHow to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

Citroen.png3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and replacement Audi a3 key RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter key for audi your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement audi a3 key. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially in the case of a Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common part across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
