Acclaimed as a great campaigning journalist, Paul Foot was 24 when he fell in love with fellow Oxford student Monica Beckinsale and told his best friend, Richard Ingrams that he intended to marry her.

The soon-to-be Private Eye editor immediately wrote to Foot warning of Monica's promiscuity, and getting another student Margaret Jay, daughter of Labour PM Jim Callaghan to co-sign it.

According to a forthcoming Verso biography of Foot, who died in 2004, Ingrams urged him to drop Monica.

'I did advise against it,' admits Ingrams. 'But Paul took no notice.' They married in 1962 and were divorced in 1970.

Should Starmer beat Sunak to Downing Street, the King will welcome his third PM in record time, just short of twenty months since he began his reign.

The record was previously held by George III, who had his third PM, Lord Bute, after two and a half years on the throne.

At this rate, the King could exceed his mother's achievement of receiving fifteen PMs after eighteen general elections.

Only one PM has served three monarchs - Stanley Baldwin, although that was largely of his own making after forcing through an abdication.

The late Queen's protectiveness towards the Princess of Wales, pictured, prompts body language expert Judi James to compare her to a mother duck in a Channel 5 documentary to be shown on Saturday.

'The Queen's approach was to have the kind of body language of a mother duck,' spouts Judi.

'Which is that you just carry on through the water and you put a new duckling at the back of the queue and you kind of let them get on with it.'

If HM urged duckling Kate to catch up did she reply: 'I'm going as quack as I can m'am?'

Wishing Gareth Southgate's team bon voyage, FA President Prince William avoids raising hackles this time around.

Back in 2022, he was under fire for openly supporting England over the Welsh team in the World Cup - only to hastily adjust his stance by awkwardly announcing he was 'supporting both'.

No such headache this time: the Welsh didn't qualify for Euro 2024...

'It's still my song, not hers. I mean, Françoise might have written the French lyric - but who bloody cares about France, anyway? Bloody French - they're a pain in the a**e!'
